The Greensboro Alumnae Delta Cultural Enrichment Center, Inc. (GADCEC) sponsored two (2) educational seminars for the 2010 Jabberwockettes of the Greensboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
In October 2010, GADCEC hosted a Financial Education and Training Seminar. The purpose of this seminar was to inspire college students to close the wealth gap and increase their savings and decrease student debt. This seminar was presented by the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development (The Institute), Durham, North Carolina.
This seminar discussed the various types of debt that college students could obtain while in college. The session included ways to avoid predatory marketing of credit cards to college students and provide resources to build wealth. This session offered practical financial management tools to manage college debt (i.e. student loans, credit cards, and medical debt and auto loans) and resources that they can begin to implement. The primary purpose of the session was to provide college students foundation information about credit and its relation to employment, insurance, utility deposits, interest rates, and loan terms.
In November 2010 GADCEC hosted a “Succeeding in the 21st Century” Seminar, facilitated by Bennett College’s Study Skills Center. The purpose of this seminar was to enhance literacy and improve study skills.
The presentation included characteristics of a 21st Century scholar; what it takes to be successful; goal setting; having the right attitude to succeed; time management, and the five skills necessary to succeed (note taking, researching, writing, reading, and test taking). The seminar offered ten study habits of successful students. The girls were divided into several groups and given exercises which allowed them to think it through and present a conclusion.
